A study of kidney donors to understand the link between kidney disease and heart disease

Professor Jonathan N Townend (lead researcher)

University of Birmingham

Start date: 01 June 2013 (Duration 3 years)

Effect of a reduction in renal function on arterial stiffness: a prospective multicentre study of kidney donors

Dr Jonathan Townend’s team from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham is researching the link between kidney disease and the development of heart disease. Changes in the kidney as a result of disease are thought to affect the heart and circulatory system. This can eventually lead to high blood pressure and the onset of heart disease, heart failure, stroke or even sudden cardiac death. The team will study 440 kidney donors (and 440 non-donors) from around the UK for one year after their donation to analyse whether a decrease in their kidney function, given they only have 1 kidney left, has an effect on the stiffness of their arteries and their blood pressure. Their findings should help demonstrate if, due to a link between kidney disease and heart and circulatory disease, a reduction in kidney function is associated with the onset of circulatory disease. This should also help inform decisions on the best type of clinical treatment for those patients.
