Developing whole heart MRI
Dr Peter Gatehouse (lead researcher)
Imperial College London
Start date: 01 November 2013 (Duration 3 years)
Development of whole-heart first-pass myocardial perfusion MRI
Coronary artery disease and some inherited heart muscle diseases cause patients to experience symptoms of breathlessness, fatigue and chest pain, because of a restricted blood supply to the heart muscle. A relatively new method for measuring the severity of the restriction in blood flow uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. Dr Peter Gatehouse at Imperial College London will develop and test new ways to make this measurement using MRI, aiming to overcome some difficulties of the methods used at the moment, so that the entire heart muscle can be measured in patients. This new development will provide cardiologists with more complete diagnostic information about the blood supply to a patient’s heart muscle.
