Studying a protein that encourages new blood vessels to grow

Start date: 01 September 2017 (Duration 3 years, 3 months)

Determining the role of Protocadherin 1 in angiogenesis (Mr Werther Vecchiato)

Dr Victoria Heath’s PhD student is finding out how a protein called protocadherin 1 helps new blood vessels to form. When the blood supply to parts of the body becomes restricted because of blocked blood vessels, blood vessels need to grow to provide new routes around the blockage. This process is called angiogenesis, but we don’t fully understand what molecules control it. Understanding angiogenesis could reveal new ways to treat diseases such as coronary artery disease (when blood vessels become furred up with fatty plaques, narrow and eventually become blocked), which increase the risk of having a heart attack. Dr Heath has discovered that a protein called protocadherin 1 (PCDH1) helps the cells that line all vessels to move and form tubes, which are crucial processes for angiogenesis. In this project, the student will explore the impact of changing levels of PCDH1 on angiogenesis in cells and mouse models. PCDH1 is found on the surface of these cells, but also extends down into the inside of the cell. This research will help us understand how PCDH1 works with the ‘machinery’ inside the cell that controls cell movement and tube formation. The student will also use an animal model to look at what happens to angiogenesis and blood vessel formation when PCDH1 is removed. This research could lead to a better understanding of ways to treat heart disease by encouraging new blood vessels to grow and restoring blood flow to tissues damaged after a heart attack.
