Teaching the heart to repair itself
Professor Paul Riley (lead researcher)
University of Oxford
Start date: 01 October 2017 (Duration 4 years)
BHF Centre of Regenerative Medicine (renewal)
The BHF funds three pioneering Centres of Regenerative Medicine at top UK universities. Each centre has a different scientific focus, but together they are moving us closer to our goal of unlocking ways to repair the damage caused by a heart attack. This ‘Oxbridge’ BHF Centre of Regenerative Medicine is headed by BHF Professor Paul Riley and brings together experts based at the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Manchester. This unique collaboration between researchers at these internationally renowned universities will include the expertise of three BHF Professors: Professor Martin Bennett at Cambridge as well as Professors Shoumo Bhattacharya and Paul Riley at Oxford. Their teams are looking at how stem cells – which can divide and turn into other cells – form the heart at the start of life. This will give us clues about how we might rewind the clock, advancing our understanding of how the heart might be taught to repair itself after the damage of a heart attack.
