Growing new blood vessels
Professor Andrew Howard Baker (lead researcher)
University of Edinburgh
Start date: 01 October 2017 (Duration 4 years)
BHF Centre of Regenerative Medicine (renewal)
The BHF funds three pioneering Centres of Regenerative Medicine based at top UK universities. Each centre has a different scientific focus, but together they are moving us closer to our goal of unlocking ways to repair the damage caused by a heart attack. A heart attack devastates the supporting network of vessels that nourish beating heart cells with blood. Without a way to regenerate lost blood vessels, there will be no effective new therapy to mend the heart. This Centre is a partnership between researchers based at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Bristol, Imperial College London and King’s College London. The major focus of this BHF Centre of Regenerative Medicine is in bringing us closer to a therapy to repair blood vessels damaged by a heart attack. The Centre is led by BHF Professor Andrew Baker, whose team in Edinburgh and Glasgow is working closely with some of the UK’s leading scientists in this field, including BHF Professors Costanza Emanueli, Manuel Mayr and Ajay Shah. This group of researchers are exploring different avenues to reach their goal of a new treatment, from fundamental stem cell science to early-stage trials of new treatments in patients.
