A more precise imaging method to diagnose treatable coronary artery disease

Professor Vanessa Ferreira (lead researcher)

University of Oxford

Start date: 01 March 2015 (Duration 3 years)

Assessment of myocardial ischaemia and viability in coronary artery disease using novel cardiac magnetic resonance imaging T1-mapping techniques (Dr Alexander Liu)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels feeding the heart muscle. Parts of the heart that receive poor blood supply may still be alive, and it is important to identify these parts of the heart because they get better with treatments like coronary artery bypass grafts or stenting. Dr Vanessa Ferreira and colleagues at the University of Oxford have developed a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique called T1-mapping for this purpose. The new technique uses MRI pictures to produce a high definition, colour map of the heart. This helps with the diagnosis of coronary heart disease. The team believes it can distinguish whether parts of the heart are receiving poor blood supply, and whether those areas are still alive, without the need to inject any contrast dye or medications to help with diagnosis. In this Clinical Research Training Fellowship, the fellow will compare how well T1-mapping works against the gold standard test for diagnosing blockages of the heart vessels (called an angiogram) in people with CAD. They will also see how well T1-mapping can predict the recovery of the heart muscle after blockages have been treated. The aim is for the new test to better diagnose blockages of heart blood vessels and help doctors decide whether patients will benefit from further heart procedures, such as bypass surgery or angioplasty.
