How can I lower my blood pressure naturally, without medication?

Chloe MacArthur, Senior Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, says:

Maintaining a good blood pressure is an important way to keep your risk of heart and circulatory disease low. There are several things that you can do to help keep it down, although some people with high blood pressure will benefit from taking medication too. Getting more physically active can help lower your blood pressure, as well as improve your overall health and wellbeing. It doesn’t need to be in a gym or a long run – , a brisk walk or being more active around the house can help increase your activity levels.

A healthy balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables can also help to keep blood pressure down. Most of us in the UK eat too much salt, and this can contribute to raised blood pressure. Most of the salt we eat is already in our food, so it’s a good idea to cook from scratch so that you can control how much salt is in your meals. Bear in mind that foods like bread and soup can contain a lot of salt.

Making healthy lifestyle choices such as these can benefit your overall health as well as your blood pressure, but they might not always be enough to keep your blood pressure down to a healthy level. Some people will need their GP’s support and medication to help keep it under control and reduce their risk of a heart attack and stroke.

If you don’t know what your blood pressure is, ask your GP or pharmacy for a blood pressure check.
