What: Free short walks to encourage people to get active at their own pace. Walks range from 30 minutes to 90 minutes.

Ramblers
What: Ramblers works to safeguard the places where people go walking and encourages more people to do so. It offers a range of walks, from ‘easy access’ walks suitable for people with mobility issues and those pushing wheelchairs and pushchairs, to ‘technical’, which may require scrambling and ropes. There are age-specific groups and non-age-specific groups (mostly retired people).
Where: England, Scotland and Wales.
Cost: £3.25 a month or £34.50 a year for individuals. Joint membership, concessions and discounts are also available, and the first three walks are free.

The Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA)
What: Long-distance group walks and ‘challenge events’ (usually at least 20 miles) in rural, mountainous and moorland areas.
Where: England, Wales and Southern Scotland
Cost: £13 a year for individuals or £19.50 a year for families. You don’t have to be an LDWA member to take part in a ‘challenge event’, although it usually offers an entry discount. You can try a few ‘social walks’ for free before joining.

Walk NI
What: A range of clubs offering short (up to five miles), medium (five to 20 miles) and long walks (longer than 20 miles), plus an accessible walk scheme for people with mobility issues.
