Department for Education guidelines

All schools should register their defibrillators on The Circuit, the National Defibrillator Network. Registration on The Circuit is also included in the National Governance Association’s compliance guidelines.

Make sure your defibrillator(s) are registered. Visit DefibFinder to find out. If your school does not appear, your defibrillator(s) are not registered.

Why it's important

  • Every minute counts: Every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation during a cardiac arrest reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%.
  • Ambulance services need to guide callers the nearest defibrillator: When someone dials 999, they may not know a defibrillator is nearby or where it’s located.
  • Immediate action saves lives: Registration enables rapid access, so defibrillation can begin before the ambulance arrives. This means no time is lost searching for a defibrillator or the person responsible for it.

Not sure where to start with registration? This short video walks you through the process.

Make a lifesaving difference

Whether it’s a pupil, staff member, visitor, or someone from the local community, ambulance service call handlers must be able to locate the nearest defibrillator quickly.

Research in the West Midlands revealed that just over a third of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurred within 300 metres of a school.

There is no cost to register, and it could help save a life.

Don’t let an unregistered defibrillator be the missing link in an emergency.
