RevivR™ CPR Training FAQs

What is ‘BHF RevivR’?

‘BHF RevivR’ is a web-based app that allows users to learn the steps to performing lifesaving bystander CPR and how to use defibrillator.

Can I learn how to save a life in 15 minutes?

You can help save a person’s life by knowing what to do in an emergency. Going through this short training you will learn the steps to perform CPR. Following these simple instructions in case of an emergency, can increase the chances of survival of a person suffering an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Can this training tool only be accessed by a mobile phone?

No, you can also access this training on tablets or desktop devices, but this training is intended to be used on mobile devices for the best experience.

Why do you need access to my camera?

BHF RevivR uses your mobile device's camera to measure the rate of chest compressions. The camera detects/counts the 'nodding' movements of the head to give objective feedback on the compression rate. We do not record, save or share the camera feed. No videos or photos are collected or stored in user’s mobile device or our servers. The algorithm for determining compression rate has been developed by University of Stavanger.

I can’t see my face in the camera screen, how do I make it so I can?

Tilt the phone upwards using a book or something similar so that your face is shown in the middle of the camera.

I cannot get my camera to work. How can I make the camera work?

Ensure you allow 'camera permissions' in the privacy settings of the browser that you are using. Please keep in mind that if you are accessing the training via other apps like Facebook or Twitter that you allow camera access for the app you have used to access this training tool.

What is a simulated 999 call?

During the training you will learn how to get help from the emergency operator if you cannot wake the patient. You will hear a pre-recorded emergency operator assisting you. You will not be required to talk to a real operator, it will only let you practise the communication that you should expect when you help save someone’s life. Do not worry, you are not making a real-life 999 call.

Why can I not hear anything during the 999 call?

Make sure to increase the volume of your device.

Can I save the training to come back to it later?

Yes. Just click the ‘claim my free spot for later’ button on the home page and we will send you an email with the training link so you can access it when you’re ready.

How much does it cost for me to take the training?

The training is free for everyone – we want as many people to learn these lifesaving skills as possible.

How many times can I do the training?

As many as you want.

Who is this training appropriate for?

This training is intended for anyone living in the UK who wants basic awareness training in CPR and how to use a defibrillator. We are targeting the training at those over 18 years old, this is simply because CPR is now on the curriculum in all nations and younger people will now learn CPR at school. However, anyone can learn the steps to save a life using British Heart Foundation's RevivR.

Does this training give me a formal qualification?

No, there is no formal qualification needed to perform CPR. However, you can claim an attendance certificate at the end of the training.

How often do I need to repeat training?

CPR skills should be refreshed at least every 12 months as studies show our retention when it comes to CPR skills is low. You should consider booking a refresher course every 12 months for your own benefit. It could help you save a life.

How long does this training take?

On average the training takes 10-15 minutes.

What does this training include?

This training covers what CPR is, when to perform CPR, how to perform CPR and how to use a defibrillator. There is a quiz, an interactive training section which gives real-time feedback on your chest compressions, a simulation 999 call and a defibrillator information animation and practice section to teach you all you need to know as a bystander to perform CPR and use a defibrillator.

I’m scared of getting Covid so do not want to perform CPR on a stranger – what should I do?

The current guidance from the Resuscitation Council UK is:

Do not give rescue breaths, perform hands-only CPR. Do not put your face close to the person you are helping, place a towel or a piece of clothing over the mouth and nose. Wear a face mask and wash your hands if possible. If the casualty is someone from your household and you feel comfortable to, you may give rescue breaths and do not need to cover the patients mouth and nose. Watch our video on YouTube to learn how to perform rescue breaths.
