HeartSafe Communities guide

British Heart Foundation teamed up with St John Ambulance, Resuscitation Council UK and Oliver Cookson Foundation to form the HeartSafe Communities Project, which aimed to make a community in Manchester more resilient to cardiac arrest.

Our HeartSafe Communities guide is based on our findings and is designed for anyone with an interest in making their community safer. It includes information and guidance to help you:

  • determine where is best to place a defibrillator
  • organise CPR training
  • engage your community to become more 'HeartSafe'.

Why it’s important to teach CPR in your community or workplace

A cardiac arrest happens when a problem with the heart’s electrical rhythm stops it from pumping blood properly to the rest of the body. It can happen anywhere and at any time. 

By training people in lifesaving skills, if the worst happens, they’ll be there to give someone the best possible chance of survival.
