The Heart of Steel is found in Meadowhall Shopping Centre, 3 miles north-east of Sheffield city centre. It’s accessible by car, rail and bus.

Sheffield was chosen as the location for the Heart of Steel because of its rich industrial past and bright future in advanced manufacturing technologies. 

There is another important reason behind the choice of location. Yorkshire has some of the highest rates of heart and circulatory diseases in the UK. It's hoped that the sculpture will help raise awareness of this. The Heart of Steel already has thousands of engravings by supporters living in Yorkshire. 

The Heart of Steel was created by Steve Mehdi, a Sheffield sculptor and ex-steel worker who wanted to honour Sheffield’s steel workers. The city is a renowned world centre of steelmaking, dating back to the 17th Century.  

He wanted to make a piece of art that would give back to the community and become an icon for the region. 

Steve designed the sculpture in the classic heart shape to make it easily recognisable. With high levels of heart and circulatory diseases in Yorkshire, BHF was a natural partner to help raise funds and awareness.

The Heart of Steel was built through a collaboration of 4 Sheffield companies; Maher Ltd, Doncaster Bramah, Pryor Marking Technology and PES Performance. 

It’s made from Inconel, a super alloy normally found in high performance engine parts used in the aerospace industry and Formula One.  

This material was specially crafted for the Heart of Steel by a team of designers, production programmers and steel producers. It will not rust or wear away, ensuring that the Heart of Steel remains a lasting sculpture.

The terms and conditions (‘Terms and Conditions‘) set out on this page (together with our General Website Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy) apply to the use of this Website. By accessing this Website and/or placing an request to have your chosen name engraved on the Heart of Steel, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions, you must not use or access this Website or place a request with us.

In the event of any conflict or inconsistency between these Terms and Conditions and our General Website Terms and Conditions, these Terms and Conditions shall take precedence.

1. This Website will guide you through the steps you need to take to place an request with us to have your chosen name engraved on the Heart of Steel. Our request process allows you to check and amend any errors before submitting your request to us. Please take the time to read and check your request at each step of the process.

2. When you request an engraving on this Website, we will send you an email confirming that we’ve received your request. Please note that this does not mean your request has been accepted. The contract between us will only be formed when we send you an email confirming that your request has been accepted.

3. You must be at least 18 years old or under supervision of a parent or legal guardian to place a request to have your chosen name engraved on the Heart of Steel.

4. These Terms and Conditions constitute the entire agreement between you and us and supersedes and extinguishes any and all previous agreements, promises, assurances, warranties, representations and understandings between us, whether written or oral.

1. All requests must be placed through this Website to have your chosen name engraved on the Heart of Steel. BHF accepts Visa, Mastercard and bank Maestro cards and Paypal. BHF does not accept Visa Electron, American Express or Diner's Club cards.

2. When making your payment, it is essential that you provide the required information specified by BHF. Your card or PayPal account will be debited immediately upon placing your request.

3. During the checkout process, you’ll be asked to enter your payment details. By completing your payment details, you confirm that the credit or debit card or PayPal account being used is yours. All fields indicated as compulsory must be completed. Please note that we may collect and store your information using an encrypted secure payment mechanism and will only use your information in accordance with our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

1. If you’ve placed a request for your chosen name to be engraved on the Heart of Steel, you will only be able to change or cancel your request in the following circumstances:

a) You will have 24 hours from the time that you place a request to change or cancel that request. After 24 hours have passed, your chosen name to be engraved will be sent for production and you will not be able to cancel or change that request. Your 24 hours will run from the time that you place your request and will run outside normal business hours.

b) If your engraving is invalid and does not meet the guidelines set out on our Website, we will contact you and give you the opportunity to amend the engraving. If you do not respond within the timescale outlined in our correspondence, we will close your request and gratefully accept your suggested donation towards our lifesaving research. You may of course still request another engraving in the future. 

2. Once your chosen name is engraved on the Heart of Steel it will remain there indefinitely and cannot be erased.

3. To amend a request, please contact us on 0300 330 3322. Please note, you will only be able to change the engraving details (such as name and dates) within the time period specified above. 

4. We reserve the right to refuse to process any request that may cause offence or distress to others and in such a case we will contact you in accordance with the process outlined about (in 1b). We will not be responsible for any copyright infringement by the customer.

5. For further information about your statutory rights, contact your local authority Trading Standards department or consumer advice centre (for example the Citizen's Advice Bureau if you are in the UK).

1. Usage of your personal information is governed by the BHF Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, which form part of these Terms and Conditions. We will keep your personal information on a secure server and we will fully comply with all applicable UK data protection laws and consumer rights. We use your information only for the following reasons and as set out in our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy:

• to process your request;  and
• with your consent, to advise you on our lifesaving research and how you can help us to keep more hearts beating through fundraising, events and volunteering opportunities.

2. In order to process your request, we will share your personal data and your chosen name with Yorkshire Man of Steel Limited (‘YMS‘) to enable your chosen name to be engraved on the Heart of Steel and to enable YMS to manage the Heart of Steel and The Steel Man projects.

Please note that BHF reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions from time to time. BHF will publish any amendments to these Terms and Conditions on this Website and any amendments shall apply from the date on which they are published. These Terms and Conditions must be checked before placing a request on this Website for your chosen name to be engraved on the Heart of Steel.

1. We are responsible for any foreseeable loss or damage you suffer that is caused by our breach of these Terms and Conditions or our negligence. Loss or damage is foreseeable if it is obvious it will happen, or if both parties knew it might happen at time the contract was formed.

2. We do not in any way seek to exclude or limit our liability to you where it would be unlawful to do so, including for:

• death or personal injury caused by our negligence
• fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation
• any breach of your statutory rights under sections 9-11, 13 and 14 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (i.e. items must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and match any description, samples and/or model provided); or
• defective products under the Consumer Protection Act 1987.
