Joint funding with other biomedical research charities

Our partnerships with other charitable funders to support research into cardiovascular disease is an important step in our fight to beat heartbreak forever. Below is a list of organisations that we work with and details on particular research projects. 

Stroke Association and Alzheimer's Society (joint funding call for research into vascular dementia) 2016/17

  • Dr Roxane Carare, University of Southampton, SP/17/6/33092.
    Failure of fluid drainage from cerebral white matter. BHF awarded £111,810 towards a total award of £245,198 over 3 years

  • Professor Joanna Wardlaw, University of Edinburgh, SP/17/7/33093.
    Rates, Risks and Routes to Reduce Vascular Dementia. BHF awarded £538,080 towards a total award of £1,179,476 over 4 years

  • Dr Karen Horsburgh, University of Edinburgh, SP/17/8/33094.
    Disintegration of the cerebrovascular matrisome: a central mechanism leading to small vessel disease and vascular cognitive impairment. BHF awarded £364,800 towards a total award of £799,806 over 4 years

Stroke Association

The BHF and Stroke Association previously ran an annual joint call for Clinical Study Grants in stroke research with a vascular focus. Please note that this annual call is no longer active. See below for details of past awards:

  • 2016/17: Professor Richard McManus, University of Oxford, SP/17/13/33347.
    Sixth grant: Towards An Integrated Self-Monitoring SolutIoN for Stroke/TIA: TASMIN5S. BHF awarded £1,109,564.00 towards a total award of £1,479,418 over 5 years.
  • 2015/16: Professor Keith Muir, University of Glasgow, CS/15/8/32065.
    Fifth grant: Alteplase-Tenecteplase Trial Evaluation for Stroke Thrombolysis (ATTEST-2). BHF awarded £750,000 towards a total award of £1,000,000 over 5 years.
  • 2013/14: Professor Jesse Dawson, University of Glasgow, RG/13/15/30683.
    Fourth grant: Xanthine oxidase Inhibition for improvement of Long-term Outcomes Following Ischaemic Stroke and Transient ischaemic attack (XILO-FIST). BHF awarded £749,952 towards a total award of £999,936 over 5 years.
  • 2011/12: Professor Jonathan Mant, University of Cambridge, RG/11/8/29214.
    Third grant: Does a ‘polypill’ have a role in secondary prevention of stroke in older people in the developed world (PROPS)? BHF awarded £749,864 towards a total award of £999,818 over 5 years.
  • 2010/11: Professor Hugh Markus, University of Cambridge, RG/10/8/28561.
    Second grant: How intensively should we treat blood pressure in established cerebral small vessel disease (PRESERVE)? BHF awarded £770,710 towards a total award of £994,464 over 5 years.
  • 2009/10: Professor David Werring, University College London, RG/10/003/28214.
    First grant: Microbleeds and genetic risk factors to predict the risk of intracranial haemorrhage in patients treated with anticoagulation following cardioembolic stroke due to atrial fibrillation (CROMIS-2). BHF awarded (£751,774 towards a total award of £939,718 over 5 years.

Cancer Research UK

  • 2016/17: Dr David Adlam, University of Leicester, SP/16/5/32415.
    Cardio-oncology: A high resolution national electronic health record investigation of the interplay between cancer and heart disease. BHF awarded £770,450 towards a total award of £1,464,961.45 over 5 years.

  • 2016/17: Dr Lion Shabab, University College London, FS/16/69/32741.
    Lynn MacFadyen PhD Studentship in Tobacco Control: E-cigarettes for harm reduction in people with mental illness. BHF awarded £39,137 towards a total award of £78,274 over 3 years.

Wellcome Trust

  • 2016/17: Professor Maria Conte, King’s College London, IG/16/2/32273.
    Funding to support the acquisition of 800MHZ and 600MHz spectrometers and resources for automation to be housed within current NMR Facility in Centre for Biomolecular Spectroscopy. BHF awarded £1,000,000 towards a total award of £3,100,570.

  • 2007/08: Professor Nish Chaturvedi, University College London, SP/07/001/23603.
    Ethnic differences in risks and outcomes of the cardiometabolic syndrome: Southall and Brent revisited: SABRE. 5 years, £1,000,000 towards a total award of £2,629,948.
