Obesity
'Obese' is a strong word,
and one that can be difficult to deal with. If you are obese,
you may already face daily challenges to your health and wellbeing.
Problems might include sleeping difficulties and back pain,
mobility and joint problems.
Your doctor may have also explained that obesity puts you at
increased risk of coronary heart
disease, type 2 diabetes, high
blood pressure and even certain
cancers.
Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight can really help you
avoid these risks. If you already have heart disease, high
blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes it can help you manage your
condition.
Getting the help you need
Taking control of your weight can be a daunting task. The issues
you face may be very different from people who are trying
to lose weight for the first time, or have less weight to lose.
Changing the habits of a lifetime can be overwhelming too.
There are options available to help you
- from dietary treatments, supported physical activity and
cognitive-behaviour therapy to weight loss medication and bariatric
surgery. It's important you discuss these with your GP or
specialist so they can help you decide what is right for you. For
more information about some of these treatments, visit the website
of the specialist charity Weight Concern.
