A young life cut short

Chanel-Lee Easy

Chanel Easy was 16 when, out of the blue, she had a cardiac arrest and died. She had an undiagnosed heart condition that had caused her heart to stop beating. Her dad, Glen, tells his story.

‘The worst phone call I’ve ever received’

“I had some missed calls coming through from a number I didn’t recognise. The third time I picked up. It was my brother in law. He told me Chanel has passed away.

Chanel had been staying with her mum, and we had spoken on the phone the night before.

Everything had been fine, but suddenly that night she had died of a cardiac arrest.

To this day, I don’t know how I made the journey to see her.

The devastation of her death has changed my life forever.

'We shared many happy memories'

I loved being a ‘hands on’ dad.

I taught her to ride a bike when she was a little girl. I remember one evening after work I decided I would take the stabilisers off her bike and take her to the park.

I found a little hill and told Chanel I would be holding the bike so not to worry. I let the bike go, and she started to ride.

This sounds like a small thing, but to me it’s a cherished memory.

‘I was broken’

Chanel was a very determined young woman.

She had started her A-Levels, and was studying law. She wanted to be a lawyer when she grew up She was focused, and happy.

As a parent, you always want to protect your child, and keep them safe. To hear she had this heart condition and none of us knew about it. It’s hard to take.
For a few years I was broken. I needed time to build up my strength.

It still feels unreal that she is no longer here. She was my world. The devastation of her death has changed my life forever.”
