Our annual report and accounts

It has been another fantastic year for the BHF; our work to beat heartbreak forever has been taken forward with the determination, energy and skill of so many - including our incredible supporters, our committed staff and volunteers and the world-leading researchers we fund.

Our annual report and accounts tells the story of our progress over the last financial year and some of the personal stories of people affected by heart and circulatory conditions.

We aim to ensure that at least 70p of every £1 raised will be available to spend on our life saving work, and the balance is invested to grow our income. This year 72p in every £1 raised was available to spend on charitable activities; the remaining 28p was invested to generate our income.

Last year we awarded an incredible £128.2m in life saving medical research grants that will improve how we prevent, diagnose and treat heart and circulatory diseases. We’ve committed to funding a billion pounds of ground-breaking research over the next 10 years to deliver significant breakthroughs that will help save and improve the lives of millions of people across the UK and globally.

Our generous supporters helped us to raise an incredible £138.1m towards our life saving work. This includes £84.9m left to us in legacies, and £53.2m raised by our generous supporters through community fundraising activities, corporate partnerships, events, major gifts and mass participation events.

Our 732 BHF shops across the UK generated £22.9 million in profit by collecting, sorting and selling around 74,000 tons of goods over the last year. While our shops and stores remain vibrant community hubs, our growing online activity saw us sell 143,000 items on eBay, helping us to bring in £5.4m across eBay and online sales.
