Over the past year Santander staff successfully raised an incredible £1.2 million to help our fight against cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The money raised will fund the our Freephone Heart Helpline which provides emotional and practical support to heart patients and their families for the next two years and support two research projects for three years which could lead to better treatments for those living with CVD.

Fundraising efforts

During the year Santander staff took part in variety of fundraising activities, including supporting our fundraising campaigns such as ‘Wear It. Beat it.’ in February and our autumn stock donation campaign ‘Bag it. Beat it.’ for our shops.

Bespoke Santander events included a London to Cambridge cycle challenge for Santander’s Executive team which raised £23,614 and a 50 million step challenge which saw over 1300 staff walk 111 million steps in 10 days raising £149,410.

A relay challenge saw six riders cycle from Glasgow to London over five days visiting Santander regional offices enroute, raising £49,928 and an international challenge where 36 Santander staff travelled to India to build a school for disabled children in Pondicherry and raised £172,370.

Life saving skills

Alongside fundraising activity we worked together with Santander to train their staff  in CPR as part of our ambition to create a Nation of Lifesavers. We rolled out the CPR training across Santander's 10 regional offices and all 850 branches to provide its 20,000 staff with the opportunity to learn this vital skill. As a result of the campaign, the bank also installed AEDs into its major offices to further support the chances of survival in the case of a cardiac arrest.

Working together

Our Chief Executive, Simon Gillespie, said: “We are thrilled that this has been such a successful partnership. Not only have the staff at Santander raised an amazing amount for our life saving research but we have also been able to work together to provide staff with essential life saving skills through our Call Push Rescue training and provided insight into keeping hearts healthy.

Thanks to Santander staff and their incredible fundraising efforts we are ever closer to realising our vision of a world where people don’t die prematurely or suffer from heart and circulatory disease."
