Annual Review

We have reported a surge in spending on our world-class research programme with the launch of our Big Change: Annual Report and Accounts 2013/14 and Big Change: BHF Annual Review.

Our Annual Report and Accounts show an increase of £2.2 million in total income in the year, with the total income figure standing at £136.9 million.

Voluntary income activities, including fundraising and events, accounted for £102.3 million of the total income.

Our strong financial performance meant we could invest £115.2 million in life saving research to fight cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the year to March 14, up 27% from the previous year’s research spend of £90.4 million. 80% of our charitable expenditure was put towards our cutting-edge programme of research to fight against CVD.

Simon Gillespie, our Chief Executive, said: “It has been an incredible year for us. We would like to offer our deepest thanks to all our supporters, from those who set up a monthly direct debit, to those who took part in an event or donated at one of our 700 plus shops or stores. Thanks to our supporters we’ve been able to continue to lead the fight for every heartbeat with our ground-breaking programme of research.

“Amongst many successes, we have expanded our revolutionary programme of Centres of Research Excellence, committing £18 million to funding of four existing centres for a further five years and investing £6 million in two more centres at Cambridge and Glasgow. These world-leading hubs will use the BHF’s support and investment to make discoveries that will save lives.

“We’ve made amazing progress over the past 12 months, but we can’t stand still. CVD causes over 160,000 deaths in the UK each year. We are the single biggest funder of cardiovascular research in the UK and need more donations and support to power our research programme to alleviate the suffering of those who are affected by CVD.”
