Louise Hazel and one of our champions

Our events enjoyed another phenomenal year in 2013. So, on Tuesday evening last week, we organised a celebration evening to recognise and thank just some of the fundraisers and volunteers who made it such a success.

Our Running Champion and GB Heptathlete, Louise Hazel, was on hand to present five awards in recognition of some exceptional supporters who have made a huge contribution to the charity. Those honoured this year were:

  • Dr Peter Wilkinson, a self-proclaimed cycling cardiologist. Peter has been taking part in our overseas bike rides for the past 20 years and has raised around £20,000. He'll be taking on his 10th ride this November the Kenya Rift Valley.
  • Long term volunteer, Richard Ruffell, has generously given up his time over the years to volunteer at the London to Brighton Bike Ride and our London 10k Runs.
  • Richard Elder, from our corporate partner ISS. Richard's dedication to the partnership has seen him take part in many events over the years and rally others to take part too. ISS has raised over £380,000 for the charity since 2010.
  • Team Britton. In 2012, Andrew Britton suffered myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) whilst on his honeymoon. Six months ago he underwent a heart transplant. His friends and family have tirelessly supported us in the past year through volunteering and fundraising. His brother, Rob, raised a staggering £6,500 by taking part in the Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim alone.
  • Survivor, Russell Hanford. At 23 years old, Russell suffered a heart attack. Ten years on, he marked the milestone by taking part in no less than four events, including the London Triathlon, and raised over £3,000.

Take part in 2014

Congratulations to all of our fantastic winners. In 2013, nearly 90,000 people took part in our events and raised over £9.8m to fund life-saving research. You can help to make 2014 even bigger by taking part in an event or volunteering at one of our many events
