The Treasury has announced improvements to the payroll giving system that will help increase donations for our life saving work.
Introduced in 1987, payroll giving allows people to make a tax-free donation to charity direct from their pay or pension. After a public consultation, the Government has announced a series of reforms aimed at helping charities realise greater benefits from payroll giving. The reforms include:
These reforms will help us to generate even more funds for the fight against coronary heart disease
- Reducing from 60 days to 35 days the time payroll giving agencies can hold on to donations before passing them to charities
- A new online payroll giving hub for donors, employers, HR professionals and charities
- A commitment by Government to promote payroll giving across its departments and the creation of an
award for the best Government department or agency
Maura Gillespie, our Policy and Advocacy Manager, said: “The Treasury has demonstrated that it’s listening to charities about the payroll giving system and the need for reform.
“Our payroll giving donations total more than £650,000 each year - enough to fund 10 heart failure nurses for a year, who could go on to help up to 10,000 patients.These welcome reforms will help us to generate even more funds for the fight against coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer.
“Governance, leadership and promotion of the scheme are key to the ongoing development of this vital fundraising tool. We’re now going to be working hard with all stakeholders to ensure more people can give as they earn without any barriers.”
