Eating fruit and vegetables can reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, according to a major new study.
The research involved more than 450,000 people over a period of 13 years and found a diet rich in fruit veg reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 15 per cent. The findings also show more than four per cent of deaths from cardiovascular disease could be prevented by eating more than 400 grams of fruit and vegetables a day.
Our dietitian Tracy Parker said: “These findings are great news for fruit and veg fans and offer a welcome reminder about the enormous heart health benefits your five-a-day can bring.
“It adds to a substantial and growing body of evidence that suggests fruit and vegetables can help protect your heart and reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke. We all need to aim for five portions of fruit and veg a day but, as this research shows us, eating even more can bring about even greater benefits.”
The study was published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
