We welcome proposals to introduce a tobacco levy

The Government will conduct a consultation on proposals to introduce a levy on tobacco firms. 

The levy will be charged on companies who produce cigarettes and other tobacco products to reflect the cost to society of smoking related ill-health.

Simon Gillespie, Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: “Smoking damages your heart and kills 100,000 people every year. 

“The tobacco industry profits from undermining the health of the nation with an addictive product.

“While new ways to curb tobacco’s deadly influence are welcome, the Government needs to crack on with introducing standardised packaging before the general election. “
