Emily-Charlotte Bown, 21, from Steventon is taking on our Blenheim Palace 10k and Half Marathon on 2 October to help raise money for our life saving research.

Emily is taking on the challenge after losing her mother, Sally, to a cardiac arrest just over three months ago. Sally was only 53.

Emily explains: “On May Bank Holiday, the whole family had got together for dinner at my uncle’s house when my mum Sally suddenly stopped and said she had no feeling in her left arm. Before I knew it, she had collapsed and stopped breathing.

“Thankfully, some of my family rushed over to administer CPR as we waited for an ambulance. On the way to hospital, her heart started beating again.

“But although our prayers had been answered and her heart was beating, she was on a life support machine, covered with wires and tubes. We’d been told that her brain had been starved of oxygen and they weren't sure if she would fully recover.

“Two days passed and she still hadn't woken from her coma – we knew there was nothing more doctors could do and she died on the 4 May 2016.”

Running for research

Emily added: “One minute I was laughing with my beautiful mum, the next she was gone. No warning and no time to say goodbye. I couldn't help but think: ‘What was the one thing my mum kept asking me to do?’

“Every year, as we watched the London Marathon on the sofa, my mum kept pushing me to sign up to a running event, to raise money for charity. And every year I said the usual ‘I’ll do it next year’. So a week after my mum’s death, I signed up to be a Heart Runner at next year’s Virgin Money London Marathon

“We also used to go to the Blenheim Palace Horse Trials as a family, so when I heard about the BHF’s Blenheim Palace 10k and Half Marathon, I knew I had to sign up to that too. If I can stop what I am going through happening to anyone else, by helping fund the BHF’s life saving research, then I will.”
