A world-leading blood pressure researcher from the University of Glasgow has received a DBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak was a BHF Professor for 13 years.

Professor Dominiczak was recognised for her contribution to cardiovascular and medical science. And this is the second time she has been honoured by the Queen after being given an OBE in 2005.

Pioneering professor

In 1998 Professor Dominiczak was made BHF Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Glasgow. She held this prestigious position until 2010 when she became the University's first female Regius Professor of Medicine.

While a BHF Professor, Dame Anna drove the building of the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre and was its Director from its opening in 2000 until 2010. Since then the University of Glasgow has secured funding as a BHF Centre of Research Excellence - one of only six in the UK.

Tackling high blood pressure

One of the major risk factors for heart attacks and strokes is high blood pressure. Professor Dominiczak is a world-leader in this field and is currently Editor-in-chief of Hypertension, the leading journal for blood pressure research.

Dame Anna is also interested in developing more tailored treatments for people at risk of heart disease and stroke by identifying the specific genes that might put these people at higher risk, no matter their lifestyle.

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak said: “The DBE is a tremendous honour but I see this as a recognition of the Glasgow University team and many other teams I have contributed to over the years.

“I’m particularly grateful to the BHF and its supporters for helping us to achieve so much in our research. Although it is lovely to be personally recognised like this, I feel most pride in seeing how the research we’re doing at Glasgow is improving and saving lives.”

Research at Glasgow

Our Centre of Research Excellence at Glasgow is led by BHF Professor Rhian Touyz, another pioneering blood pressure researcher at the University.
