We’re asking smokers to join more than 100,000 people who have already signed up to this year’s Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge from Public Health England.
Stoptober is based on research that if you can stop smoking for 28-days, you are five times more likely to be able to stay quit for good.
Stoptober runs throughout the month of October to encourage as many people as possible across the country to take part.
In the words of Al Murray, one of the comedians supporting this year’s challenge: “When it comes to stopping smoking the only thing stopping you stopping is the fact that you can’t stop, so stop stopping yourself stopping and stop.”
Stoptober provides a wide range of free quitting tools, support, guidance and encouragement for smokers wishing to attempt to go smokefree for 28 days. It is a positive and supportive campaign to help people achieve their stop smoking goal.
Our Associate Medical Director, Dr Mike Knapton, said: “The benefits of quitting smoking are huge and it’s never too late to give up. Stopping is the single best thing you can do for your own health, as well as those you love and live with.
“We know smoking is a tough habit to break and about two thirds of smokers say they want to quit. The good news is that the risk to your heart health decreases significantly soon after you stop. Stoptober offers smokers the help and support they need, and it’s a great opportunity to help thousands of people ditch the cigarettes for good.”
