Diets and weight loss

A new study suggests there is no evidence that some popular diet plans help you lose weight in the long-term.

Researchers analysed a series of clinical trials on four popular diet plans – Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers and Zone – to see whether or not they helped participants lose weight and improve their health.

The study found insufficient and conflicting data as to their long-term benefits on both weight loss and improving heart health, with some dieters regaining some of the weight lost within two years.

Victoria Taylor, our Senior Dietitian, said: “There are no quick fixes when it comes to weight loss. Changing our eating habits and lifestyles can be a challenge and take time to do.

“Tempting as they may be, we’ve always tried to encourage people to forget the fads and instead recommend a sustainable approach to weight loss by making small, achievable changes to diet and activity levels that will make a big difference in the long term.”
