Government must act fast to introduce standardised packaging for tobacco

The Government has today published proposals for the design of standardised packaging for cigarettes and other tobacco products.

The regulations set out the minimum size of government health warnings as well as size and position that tobacco branding can occupy on packaging. The regulations have been published for consultation, after which they may be revised before being voted on in Parliament.

Our Chief Executive Simon Gillespie said: “We’re glad to see that the Government has finally published plans on how standardised packaging will be implemented in the UK, but it has taken far too long to get to this point.

“Tobacco is a killer product and it is misleading for it to be presented in glitzy packaging. Every day of delay allows the tobacco industry to tempt more young people into adopting a deadly habit.

“The Government is fast running out of parliamentary time. It must now act with speed and decisiveness to ensure this crucial public health measure is law before the election.”
