New report says we need to cut down on sugar and eat more fibre

Scientists have released new dietary recommendations to help tackle the nation’s sweet tooth and the growing obesity crisis.

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, which advises the Government on diet and nutrition, has published draft proposals advising people to consume more fibre, less free sugars and minimising our consumption of sugary soft drinks.

The independent body says this could improve public health by reducing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes and bowel cancer.

Public Health England will now be carrying out reviews into the advertising of food to children both in broadcast and online, introducing a sugar tax on sweetened drinks as well as current recommendations on portion sizes to help improve the nation’s diet.

The committee report will go out to consultation for nine weeks until September 1 before the final document is published in March 2015.

“For too long people have been eating too much sugar. Getting people to lose their sweet tooth won’t be easy and education alone won’t be enough to get us to kick this habit.

“We need to stop food manufacturers bombarding families with advertising promoting products high in sugar, fats, and salt. The Government should introduce a 9pm watershed ban and consistent regulation across all media to protect children from being tempted into unhealthy choices.

“A sugar tax on sweetened drinks could also help us make major in-roads into tackling this serious public health concern."
