Alexei Peters has organised a bike ride this summer from Eton to Paris to raise money for us, in memory of a great friend.
Alexei, 16, who has just completed his GCSEs at Eton College, hopes to raise £2,000 to help fund life-saving research. He has formed a group of ten riders, ages ranging from 16 – 60, to take part on 23 August 2014. They plan to complete the ride in just three days.
One of the ten includes Nick Peters, Alexei’s Father. Nick is a Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College London and his research is funded principally by us.
Ride of remembrance
Nick is part of a cycling group called Old Bucks. Last year whilst out on a ride, Old Bucks member Paul suffered an acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest which tragically resulted in his sudden death. Paul, 58, had no known pre-existing heart condition and left behind a wife and three grown up children.
This shocking incident inspired Alexei to organise this fundraising event in memory of Paul. The group will pass the place where Paul died on the way to Paris.
Alexei says: “The purpose of this ride is in remembrance of our friend who died suddenly in front of his cycling companions. I was shocked by his death as he was someone I had ridden with myself. Raising money for the BHF is extremely fitting, especially as it will go towards funding Researchers like my dad, to find a cure for heart disease.”
