The 2012 Health Survey for England (HSE) has been published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

More than 8,000 adults and 2,000 children were surveyed. To coincide with the 2012 Olympics, this year the report included a special focus on physical activity. Some key findings include:

  • Only 67 per cent of men and 55 per cent of women met the UK guidelines for 150 minutes of exercise a week.
  • Among children aged 5-15, just 21 per cent of boys and 16 per cent of girls managed to meet the recommended 60 minutes of moderately intensive physical activity per day.

There are many activities the whole family can enjoy together.


Our Senior Cardiac Nurse, Thembi Nkala, said: “These disappointing findings show that even an Olympic year could not boost dwindling levels of physical activity in England.

“Keeping active is one of the main ways we can all reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease. Physical activity also helps children grow up fit and healthy and protects their hearts into adulthood.

“We need to educate adults and children alike about the major health benefits of an active lifestyle. Being active doesn’t have to cost the earth and there are many activities the whole family can enjoy together, such as dancing, cycle rides or long walks."
