Defib campaign gets warm welcome

Our chief executive, Simon Gillespie, has today welcomed a campaign being launched by professional golfer Bernard Gallacher to reduce the number of people needlessly dying from cardiac arrests.

Bernard suffered a cardiac arrest moments before giving an after-dinner speech in August this year.

His life was saved by people in the audience performing CPR, use of an onsite defibrillator and a quick response from the emergency services. He is now launching a campaign for all golf clubs to have a defibrillator onsite.

It’s estimated that there are around 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year. But fewer than one in ten people survive.

Our Chief Executive, Simon Gillespie, said:

“Bernard’s campaign could help save lives. A 999 call, followed by immediate CPR and defibrillation are vital in saving the life of someone having a cardiac arrest. Making defibrillators more readily available increases the likelihood of this chain being followed, giving people the best chance of survival.

“The Government and other community groups must follow Bernard’s example. We need to create a nation of lifesavers by teaching all children CPR and making defibrillators available in busy public places where cardiac arrests are most likely to occur. Only then will we stop people needlessly losing their life to a cardiac arrest.”

To date, more than 3.5 million people have been trained in CPR through our Heartstart programme.

We are campaigning for CPR to be a mandatory part of the curriculum in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and non-statutory curriculum in Scotland.

In September 2012, we delivered a 100,000 strong petition to 10 Downing Street with former Premier League football player, Fabrice Muamba, calling for life-saving skills to be taught in all schools in England.

So far the Government has refused to make CPR a compulsory part of the curriculum.
