People in Blackpool experience poorer health compared to the national average. Life expectancy for men in the most disadvantaged parts of Blackpool is 9.8 years and for Women 8.5 years shorter than for those in the least disadvantaged areas.
We will tackle health inequalities by encouraging and motivating patients, visitors and staff to lead healthier lifestyles, through:
- recruitment and training of 100 volunteer health mentors from the local community, who will deliver health information to patients, visitors and staff, at key areas in the hospital
- our volunteers will undertake an extensive training programme, designed specifically to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to deliver help around smoking, alcohol misuse and weight management
- volunteers will be based at health information points and be able to offer bed-side support to patients in wards
Blackpool Victoria Hospital is a large acute care hospital seeing 56,000 day-case and inpatients, 250,000 outpatients and over 91,000 A&E patients every year. The project aims to reach 10,000 patients per year with its heart health messages.
