Stand and gain confidence, by Charlie Haines

Young people standing in a group

Charlie Haines, who is 21 and has the inherited heart condition Marfan syndrome, has taken part in the BHF's [email protected] programme. She wrote this poem to say thank you to the BHF for the events and experiences that have helped improve her confidence.

We are all here for the same reason

We all know someone with a heart condition

All of us have travelled from the UK

Fighting each obstacle that has come our way

Diagnoses, surgeries and ongoing appointments

Hoping not to get a new disappointment

The British Heart Foundation

Releasing each of us from our own isolation

All of our hearts are a different shape and size

The BHF programme has been a big surprise

Learning how to stand and gain confidence

The BHF events have shown this as evidence

Allowing us to make new friends

And not feel like we’re being watched through a microscopic lens

So many stories have been shared

Who knew looking back, how much we’d all care

Some of us have been attending for a few years

Whilst there are some new faces getting over the original fears

There's been events all over the UK

And they've tried to never turn anyone away

There’s been events in London, Bristol and Birmingham

Glasgow, Manchester, Leiciester and Nottingham

Escape rooms, museums, theatre shows and residentials

But all of us here is pretty essential

The British Heart Foundation

Supporting us all from transition to medication

There's always been a topic to discuss

Thank you for having this scheme and being there for us.
