Shirley told us: “When I took over there was very little in terms of health and wellbeing provision, apart from some health check days. But we pride ourselves in being at the forefront of care, and I know that a healthy, happy workforce is vital to give our residents the support they need.”
Signing up to the BHF Health at Work programme helped Shirley get off to a flying start. She used a BHF email template to launch the scheme to her colleagues, which really motivated them to get involved.
Since then, she’s kept up the momentum. “We encourage the staff by sending round top tips and organising health promotion activities. We’ve had some great healthy eating events, with Fruity Fridays and a smoothie bike, and by working with our location chef’s, we’ve made some real improvements in both the staff and residents’ diet.”
With senior management right behind the programme, and nursing staff on board too, Shirley’s been able to capitalise on ExtraCare’s own resources.

The programme now provides cholesterol tests and there’s a weight management club. Shirley said: “It’s all going really well, and many thanks to the BHF for all their support. The resources they’ve supplied have been absolutely brilliant – and we hope to take part in fundraising events next February.”
ExtraCare employee, Colin, took up the pedometer challenge and managed to finally quit smoking after years of trying.
