Wendy's story

Wendy and Douglas Grant

“For me, having a heart attack is nothing like you see in the movies. There was no dramatic clutching of my chest, but I did know that there was something wrong.

After undergoing surgery to clear the blockage in my artery and insert two stents, the surgeon took off his medical gloves and said: “That’s it, Wendy, you’re fixed. Now go and get on with the rest of your life.”

In January 2017, just 3 months after my heart attack, I decided to take on the Great Wall of China Trek with my husband, Douglas. We wanted to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation’s research into heart and circulatory disease: research that saved my life.

It wasn’t easy, but on October 22nd 2017, a year to the day since my heart attack, we celebrated the last day of the challenge in Beijing together.

The trek was the most inspirational thing I have ever been part of and I’m already wondering what we’ll do next.”

Wendy and Douglas Grant took on the Great Wall of China Trek in 2017 and raised over £11,000 towards our life saving research.

2018 registrations have now closed. Please check back for 2019.

Discover the beauty of China whilst trekking for five days off the beaten track, along parts of one of the most spectacular wonders of the world.

We'll head deep into the countryside away from the places where tourists normally visit this majestic structure. You'll marvel at the panoramic vistas from watchtowers en-route and witness unrestored sections of the wall which date back to the Ming Dynasty.

The trek begins and ends in Beijing and includes a guided tour of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square.

What's included in your challenge costs

As well as supporting our life saving work, your sponsor money covers:

  • All flights (including airport and fuel taxes)
  • Foreign overland transport and luggage transfers
  • Overnight accommodation
  • All meals as per itinerary
  • Entrance fees to any sites visited on trekking days
  • Tour leader, tour doctor, guides, technical, medical and transport back-up services.

Other things to budget for

Some expenses are not included in your challenge costs.

  • Gratuities – the local guides and staff all work extremely hard to ensure a successful trip, so we recommend demonstrating your appreciation through a group tip
  • Personal expenses, such as soft and alcoholic drinks, gifts and international calls
  • Visas and vaccinations where required
  • Travel insurance – suitable for overseas charity challenges, you must have this to be allowed to travel

Training support

This is a trek suitable for all abilities, however we would always recommend putting a training schedule in place for an event like this. We suggest that you should train from three to six months prior to taking part, dependent on your current level of fitness.

On the challenge, it's important that you remember to go at your own pace – it’s not a race and the idea is to enjoy yourself.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll have access to our detailed training guidelines to help you prepare for the challenge. Our walking training zone is also full of top tips.

Your kit

What you need to wear on the challenge

To make things easier, we've created a full kit list which you can use to make sure your packing has got you covered.

If you don’t want to buy everything on the list, there is an option to hire some of the equipment from Trek Hire.

How to reach your fundraising target

Reaching your fundraising goal can be daunting, but don’t panic we’re here to help. Breaking it down into manageable chunks is a great way to start. To help you we’ve put together a fundraising plan.

Shout about your challenge

Taking on the Great Wall of China Trek is an epic challenge and one you should be proud of. You will trek up 10,000 relentless steps that’s the equivalent to climbing to the top of the Eiffel tower around 6 times, which is the same as climbing 1,800m high.

Shout loud and proud about the challenge you’re taking on and share your JustGiving page with your friends, family and colleagues.

Create a JustGiving page

Why set up a JustGiving page?

Setting up a JustGiving page is a great way to kick start your fundraising, and keep your sponsors up-to-date with what you’re doing.

Did you know…

  • People who have a JustGiving page raise 50% more money than those who don’t
  • Every time you share your page you’ll earn £5 on average
  • Every time you update your page you can earn £7 on average.

Make the most out of your page by uploading images, posting updates on how your training is going and sharing British Heart Foundation facts so your supporters know why you’re fundraising us.

Why your fundraising is so important

Before the British Heart Foundation was founded 4 in 5 children born with congenital heart disease died before their first birthday. Today in the UK, thanks to research, 4 in 5 survive into adulthood.
