What does a GP do?

Job title: The GP

Where you’ll meet them

At your doctor’s surgery.

What they’ll do

Often, your GP will be your first point of call for any health problems. He or she will be able to assess you and request relevant tests and treatments, and prescribe medications. If you need to be seen in hospital, it will usually be your GP who refers you.

Making the most of them

GPs have just 10 minutes to see each patient, so book a double appointment if you have a lot to discuss. It can be a good idea to prepare a list of questions or things you want to say beforehand.

Training

Five years medical school, then two years foundation school, then three years specialist training.
