Understanding your heart

Group of women in red.

As a woman, it’s vital to know how cardiovascular disease can affect you. Understanding your heart is one way to help you gain more control over your life.

Did you know?

Women’s Room is a place where you can find information about your heart, share your story and speak to others who have gone through similar experiences.

Your heart

Many women don’t realise they can be at risk of heart disease, which can make them more likely to ignore the symptoms and delay getting help. Understanding your condition, the tests and treatments you may be going through, and the medications you take, will help you on the road to recovery.

Your body

If you have recently had a heart attack or have been diagnosed with any other type of heart condition, it can be difficult to come to terms with what’s going on. As a woman, you may have questions about how your condition and treatment will affect your body – from issues about sex to pregnancy to the menopause.

Speak to your GP if you have any concerns. It can also be helpful to compare your experiences with other women in our online community.

Reducing your risk

A risk factor is something that increases your likelihood of getting a disease. There are several risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, also known as cardiovascular disease.

The good news is, in many cases, coronary heart disease in women can be prevented. Whatever your situation, you can reduce the impact of your risk factors and improve your chances of preventing CHD by adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

Women’s Room – a place for you

Whether you’ve lived with a heart condition all of your life, just been diagnosed, or want to make your heart health a priority, we’re here for you. Get started in our online community that’s just for women.
