Women failing to spot signs of a heart attack
Over three quarters of woman cannot identify the most common warning signs of a heart attack, according to new statistics released ahead of Bag it. Beat it. this September.
A heart attack is a life-threatening medical emergency. Around 28,000 women die from a heart attack each year in the UK – three every hour.
Despite this, nearly nine in ten women (88%) say they would avoid calling 999 or going to A&E if they experienced unusual chest pains – one of the most common warning signs for a heart attack.
Worryingly, over two fifths of women (42%) said they were not concerned about their personal risk of heart disease at all, despite over 3.5million women being affected by heart and circulatory conditions across the UK.
Thanks to our research, around 70% of people now survive a heart attack to go home to their families. However, more needs to be done to protect the tens of thousands of women that still die from a heart attack each year.
This September the British Heart Foundation is raising awareness of women and heart disease. We’re encouraging everyone to donate their unwanted goods to stores, to help fund the research so urgently needed to protect women from the devastation of heart disease.
