What attracted you to the role?
I started volunteering to gain work experience. I'm from Italy and we don’t have the same way of raising funds for charity so I found it really fascinating.
How often do you volunteer each week?
I'm looking for work at the moment, so I volunteer about 4 times each week in the afternoons.
What happens in a typical volunteering shift?
I do a bit of everything. My favourite thing is working on the shop floor: serving customers at the till, organising the stock on the shop floor and helping customers. I especially like working on the homeware displays – there's such a variety of items that come in, it's always full of surprises.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
I'm a people-person so it's all about meeting people for me. I love helping customers – whether it's grabbing an item they can't reach, or helping them find the right thing for them.
What’s your most memorable moment as a volunteer?
When I first started, there was a get-together for all the volunteers and staff working at the shop. I was amazed at how big the team is. You don't get to meet everyone on your shifts so it's great when we all get together and you realise how many people it takes to make it happen.
What would you say you have gained from volunteering?
I've gained specific skills like using the till and customer service and I've also gained a lot of confidence. Customers love to come in and chat so it's also been a great way for me to keep improving my English.
