Katrina - shop floor volunteer

a female BHF volunteer A-level student Katrina Hellier has been volunteering at our Fleet shop for two years, having joined as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award.

What attracted you to the role?

I started volunteering with the BHF as part of my Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. That was two years ago, and I am now working towards my silver award. The BHF appealed to me as close family members have had heart problems.

How often/how much time do you volunteer each week?

I volunteer one hour each week on Mondays and more often during the holidays. I'm currently studying for my A-levels in psychology, Spanish and philosophy, and I also have a part-time job working as a tennis coach, so it's great that I can fit volunteering around this.

What happens in a typical volunteering shift?

I used to work in the back room sorting clothes and books. Since I turned 17, I have started working on the shop floor, helping customers and serving them at the till, as well as making sure our displays are kept tidy. I do enjoy having a look at what clothes have come in.

What's your favourite thing about volunteering?

I love how sociable it is. I really enjoy talking to the customers and everyone in the team is so lovely.

What's your most memorable moment as a volunteer?

There have been several! My first day springs to mind as everyone was really welcoming and it was so interesting to learn about how a shop is run. I also loved my first day working on the till as it was something I had wanted to do for a while. Most recently, I got to take part in a photoshoot which was a very cool experience.

What would you say you have gained from volunteering?

I've definitely gained new skills: working on a till, dealing with customers and understanding how a charity is run – and that’s been great for my confidence. I just love being here.

What are your future plans?

I'd like to study psychology at university – I'm hoping my volunteering experience will help my application stand out.
