Aura - customer service volunteer

Designer Aura Salas Garcia has been volunteering in our Brighton furniture and electrical store for a couple of months. She enjoys the opportunity to work on her communications skills and getting great feedback from customers.

What attracted you to the role?

I’m a designer (graphic and interiors) and wanted to be in touch with people. I was passing by the shop, it’s the biggest charity shop in Brighton and because of my love of interiors it caught my eye. I wanted to help people so I asked about volunteering.

How often do you volunteer each week?

2-3 days per week.

What happens in a typical volunteering shift?

Whatever is needed – customer service, labelling, pricing – there is new furniture coming in all the time.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?

The response you get from the people you help. We have regular customers and a lot of older people who just want to talk. You can see they are happy because you have been helpful.

What’s your most memorable moment as a volunteer?

A customer told the store manager I had been really kind. I had helped her and it made me happy.

What would you say you have gained from volunteering?

Communication skills. I am from Colombia and my husband is Italian so it has been useful to practice my English.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Art, film, design, keeping active – I enjoy playing tennis.
