Costain staff with a charity cheque

In 2015 we were one of four charities benefitting from the Costain 150 Challenge, which raised over £1million in just one year.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2015, engineering solutions firm Costain set a challenging target of raising £1million, to be split equally between us, Macmillan, Samaritans and The Prince’s Trust.

By far the most ambitious charity partnership undertaken by Costain, they rose to the challenge with thousands of employees and supply chain members participating in a variety of events across the UK. They walked, ran, swam, cycled, climbed, washed, sung, rallied, baked and skydived, with the Costain Group donating £500,000 to match the money raised by its employees and supporters.

The partnership also enabled us to leave a lasting legacy of heart health, with BHF delivering heart health talks to around 400 staff at Costain sites. Costain also invested in several Call Push Rescue kits to empower their staff with the skills to save a life - around 600 staff learnt life saving CPR skills during the partnership.

The commitment to making Costain’s 150th year an extraordinary one, resulted in this inspiring collaboration raising £1.1million; exceeding its target, creating lasting benefits for staff and resulting in wider social impact.

“Our 150 challenge was far more than just raising money. We chose four charities that could provide our staff the opportunity to improve life skills and spread knowledge about issues that affect our society.  For me part of the legacy is the 600+ staff that are trained in CPR skills and the overwhelming demand from hundreds of others wishing to take part in future training events.”  James York,  Corporate Responsibility Manager, Costain
