We're delighted to announce that we have a new and exciting opportunity for people affected by heart and circulatory disease to inform what research we fund by providing us with the vital patient perspective.

Would you like to help inform what clinical research we fund?

BHF recently established a new Clinical Studies Committee that is responsible for approving and monitoring applications for clinical research. Two lay members (also called patient representatives) will be part of the new Committee to ensure the applications we fund are important and relevant to patients. The lay members will be supported by, and be part of, a wider Patient Advisory Group, made up of 12 – 15 people affected by heart and circulatory disease.   

The Lay Members and Patient Advisory Group will review applications we receive for clinical research funding and will:

  • review the quality of plain English summaries 
  • assess the importance of the research question to people affected by heart and circulatory disease
  • identify any barriers to patients taking part in the research
  • ensure researchers are involving patients throughout their research project 

The two Lay Members will use discussions with the Patient Advisory Group to provide feedback to the applicant as well as at the Clinical Studies Committee, which makes final funding decisions.

It's your personal experience of heart and circulatory disease that is most important for these roles, so you do not need to have a scientific background or any prior scientific knowledge – all we ask is that you have a keen interest in the research that BHF funds. We will provide you with full training and support to ensure you are fully prepared to take on the role.

If successful you will need to be available for:

  • a face-to-face or phone interview w/c 16th January 2017 
  • a mandatory two day training session 21st – 22nd February 2017 in London.

We will cover the cost of all travel and accommodation required.
