Emily was born with a heart condition

I’m an identical twin and before I was born, when Mummy had a scan, they found a problem with my heart. My twin sister was fine.

I was blue when I came out and I couldn’t breathe on my own.

Emily's three operations

The hospital was brand new and I was the only baby in the intensive care unit.

Mummy and Daddy kept travelling to see me. They had my twin sister Grace at home to look after as well.

When I needed my next operation I was three and it was hard on Mummy and Daddy but I was too young to understand fully.

By then I had a new baby sister called Amy and she took her first steps when I was in the hospital. Mummy missed that. But I made it through the operation and was a very brave girl.

I started school when I was nearly five and they said I wouldn’t need any more operations. But after a couple of years Mummy noticed I was getting tired a lot.

That’s when I went in for my third operation. I needed a new heart valve but they only had valves for adults, so they patched me up hoping it will last until I grow bigger. I have a zip on my chest.

I’ll need another operation later but that’s in the future. For now, I love singing at the top of my voice. I love musicals, and I love to dance and perform.

Mummy says I’ve never looked better. I ran 100 metres at sports day, and it made her cry.

Mummy calls me her heart hero.
