Stop Smoking Group success stories

Peter, 38, from Warwickshire, started smoking when he was at university. By the time he was in his thirties, he was smoking 20-a-day.

Peter's GP referred him to his local NHS Stop Smoking Service.

Peter says: 'My advisor was brilliant. I found that understanding the psychology behind giving up smoking as well as seeing what it was doing to my body, through weekly carbon monoxide monitoring, extremely motivational.

'Most important of all, I felt supported and reassured that I was doing something positive in my life. I absolutely did not want to let the advisor, or myself, down.'

Formerly a 20-a-day smoker, Osman quit smoking with the support of his local NHS Stop Smoking Service in North London.

'I'd tried giving up with willpower in the past but the additional support and advice offered by my local NHS Stop Smoking Service really helped me give up this time.

'For example, setting a quit date in advance allowed me to mentally prepare myself instead of trying to give up on a whim.'

Sisters Kal and Tor gave up smoking together using their local Stop Smoking Service in West Sussex.

Kal said: 'The local NHS stop Smoking Services were great and I'm not sure we would have been able to give up without them.

'Sian and Anne, the coordinators of my local service were amazing. They didn't get angry and really understood how hard it is to quit. But quitting is definitely worth it.'

Tor, who had been smoking since the age of 14, added: 'The local NHS Stop Smoking Services were really supportive and they helped both myself and my sister to quit and it would be great if more smokers could use them to give up smoking and stay quit for good.'

Retired shop worker, Ramesh, was referred by his GP to a group run by his local NHS Stop Smoking Service at the local hospital.

He said: 'My doctor gave me a leaflet explaining the help that was on offer from my local NHS Stop Smoking Service.

'I hadn't realised that you could get nicotine replacement therapy on prescription so that was a real plus - I didn't really want to spend lots of money giving up when my motivation to quit was to save money!

'The group support was really important to my success. I found it so useful talking about giving up with other people and encouraging each other when it got tough.'
