Centre of Research Excellence
University of Oxford
We have invested £8.4 million in a Centre for
Research Excellence at the University of Oxford.
The award allows researchers to carry out vital
research over six years, to help us understand the causes
of heart and circulatory disease, which is the UK's biggest
killer.
Internationally renowned scientists will strive to unravel the
biological processes that underlie a variety of heart and
circulatory problems and find new effective treatments.
Team work
The cutting edge research will be spearheaded by BHF Professor Hugh Watkins, a pioneering
cardiologist, and includes a mixture of basic and applied research
that will span from molecular science to epidemiology.
Researchers in the Centre will study the frequency of
heart disease in populations and conduct clinical trials -
led by BHF Professor Rory Collins - to
find ways of reducing its burden. The Centre will also identify
people who are at risk of heart and circulatory diseases, and
decipher how and why they develop. the ultimate goals are to
prevent disease as well as find targets for new
treatments or cures.
Key aims
- To develop an unrivalled reseach training
programme and attract the most talented researchers to
improve the quality of research. More than half the award will be
used to support training fellowships.
- To carry out ambitious and innovative research
and cultivate collaborations between different scientists. For
example experts from mathematics and engineers will work together
and create sophisticated computer models of the heart which can
then be used to investigate prototype therapies and surgical
procedures.
The team within the Centre includes many world leading clinical
and laboratory researchers. Our award will enable them to create a
world-class training ground for the next
generation of senior heart scientists who will continue the fight
against heart disease across the UK.
