Over 2.6 million people in the UK live with heart disease
and almost a million with heart failure.
Now, with our award of £8.9 million, experts
from many different scientific disciplines will join forces in the
BHF Centre of Research Excellence at Imperial
College London in a renewed attack in the fight against heart
disease.
The six year award will support a radical new research and
training programme that researchers at the Centre believe will help
us understand and prevent coronary heart disease, and rescue
failing hearts.
Key
aims
Led by world-leading cardiologist, BHF
Professor Michael Schneider, the Centre hosts world-class
research groups who will be tackling with a variety of
approaches.
- support a pioneering PhD training programme for 27 engineers,
medical students and bioscientists
- recruit 14 post-doctoral fellows and 8 specialist
registrars
- support world-leading scientists their cutting-edge research and key
facilities
- facilitate pioneering partnerships across scientific
disciplines.
The Centre hosts world-class research groups
who will be tackling heart disease with a variety of
approaches.
Clinical researchers will trial new therapies
for heart disease and collaborate with geneticists and cell
biologists who are exploring genes involved in heart
disease. Geneticists will team-up with
computer scientists to analyse the wealth of new
data. Biochemists will collaborate with
engineers studying the mechanics of blood flow, to
design new ways to diagnose and treat heart disease.
Within the life time of the award, highly trained researchers
will leave the Centre to establish new research groups that will
focus on heart disease. And within a decade the fruits of the
Centre’s research should ripen into new preventative medicines,
diagnostic tests, markers of risk and therapies.
Our investment will empower experts within the Centre to
translate their research into benefits for the millions of people
living with heart disease.
