BHF Research Excellence Awards
Raising the pulse of
heart research
More than one in three
deaths in the UK are from heart and circulatory disease. We
believe pioneering research is vital to help reduce this death
toll.
In an exciting new £34 million initiative we
are establishing four Centres of BHF Research
Excellence. They will use innovative approaches to fuel
scientific discovery and medical advances in prevention, diagnosis
and treatment of heart disease.
Your donations fund groundbreaking research
We invest nearly £100 in research every minute. Already our
groundbreaking work has helped to save thousands of
lives, and improve the quality of thousands more. But
still, every year many people die prematurely because of heart
disease, and those who survive can find life difficult and
frightening.
Now, we are paving the way for
researchers in the UK to raise the pulse of heart
disease research and develop new treatments, faster than ever
before.
Centres of BHF Research Excellence
We have established four Centres.
Each Centre will receive up to £1.5 million per
year over six years.
Key aims
This investment, together
with the researchers’ drive and commitment will ensure each Centre
achieves three main aims:
- To jump-start innovative research projects
and support inspirational ideas
- To seek out and train the very best young doctors and
scientists to become the next generation of heart
researcherss
- To foster pioneering research partnerships
between heart scientists and other specialists, such as engineers
and mathematicians, to gain brand new insight and ideas to tackle
heart disease.
This unique initiative will
provide the roots from which the next generation of world-leading
heart researchers will grow.
The Centres of BHF Research
Excellence should produce more than 150
talented new researchers who can tackle heart disease. And
that’s just the start – the investment will grow as researchers
collaborate and move between universities, accelerating progress
across the UK.
With the BHF’s help, UK heart research will
bring life-saving treatments to more people, more quickly.
