Non-clinical PhD studentship
("PhD")
Purpose:
To provide a foundation training in research to enable a graduate
to proceed to a PhD degree at a university in the UK.
Entry requirement:
• Awarded or expected 1st class or high upper 2nd class BSc degree,
or MSc with merit or distinction.

Duration of grant:
3 years
Award may include:
• Student stipend at
current BHF
rates
• Tuition fees at standard home student
rate (set by the research institution)
• Research consumables, directly attributable to the project,
usually less then £10,000 per year
How to apply:
• The application must be made by an established investigator who
will be the supervisor and may be for named or unnamed
students.

What to submit:
• Completed application form:
Form PHD
• Detailed research proposal and other information as listed in
Application Checklist
• Add the following additional information:
– A statement detailing the scientific techniques the
candidate will be trained in.

Form PhD.A2 – training record for each named
supervisor
– Letter of support from the Head of Department
– Brief CV of the supervisor(s) (2 A4 sides max)
• Add for named PhD candidates:

Form PhD.A1 – record of candidate’s academic
performance
– Full CV of the candidate and career intentions
– Two academic letters of reference
– Non-UK university degrees: evidence from Graduate Office
that degree held conforms to 2.1 degree or better
Number of copies required:
12 collated copies of the application form and supporting
information
Decision process:
There are no closing dates. Please submit the application when it
is ready. Receipt will be acknowledged within 1 month and we will
advise you when you can expect the result. A decision will be
reached by the Fellowships Committee (4 meetings a year) after it
has considered external peer review reports. Allow 6 months from
submission to decision.
*The BHF has allocated 4 year PhD training award
schemes to 3 universities. This scheme will be assessed in
2006-7.
