MBPhD studentship
("MBPhD")
Purpose:
To allow talented medical students to complete a PhD in
cardiovascular science before completion of their medical degree;
restricted to UK institutions that have recognised MBPhD
programmes.
Entry requirement:
• Pre-selection of the student by the university’s MBPhD programme
directorate.
• Residency requirements apply – check eligibility in
General Information on Research
Grants (please see section 11).
Duration of grant:
2 - 3 years, according
to the university’s scheme
Award may include:
• Student stipend at current BHF
rates
• Tuition fees at standard home student
rate (set by the research institution)
• Research consumables, directly attributable to the project,
usually less than £10,000 per year
How to apply:
The application must be made by an established investigator who
will be the supervisor and may be for a named student only. Please

What to submit:
• Completed application
form:
Form MBPhD
• Detailed research proposal and other information as listed in
Application Checklist
• Add the following additional information:
– Full CV of the candidate and career intentions
– Letter of support from the faculty tutor of clinical
sciences
–
Form PhD.A2 – training record for each named
supervisor
– Brief CV of the supervisor(s) (2 A4 sides max)
– Copy of university scheme rules
Number of copies required:
12 collated copies of the application form and supporting
information
Decision process:
There are no closing dates. Please submit the application when it
is ready. Receipt will be acknowledged within 1 month and we will
advise you when you can expect the result. A decision will be
reached by the Fellowships Committee (4 meetings a year) after it
has considered external peer review reports. Allow 6 months from
submission to decision.
